WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Why the name “3LR” is so important to us…
The recent discovery of the ‘third’ light receptor, or photo-receptor of the eye has overturned the conventional view of retinal organization. While 150 years of research had previously explained how we see, the discovery of the ‘third’ light receptor has added another dimension to this structure and helped explain how light regulates our 24-hour body (circadian) clock.
Light therefore plays a fundamental role not only in generating an image of the world, but in behavioral and physiological responses to our environment.
We’re so passionate about the importance of light in people’s lives, and so immersed in the science and technology of lighting our surroundings, that we named our company after this 3rd Light Receptor, or “3LR.”
